Louisa Brady’s students love her tutoring sessions because she empowers them to reach high expectations. Her compassionate, student-driven approach helps them develop agency in their academics. We sat down with her to discuss her background in education and tutoring style.

Louisa Brady, the Teacher and Writer

Originally from Massachusetts, Louisa moved to New York City to attend NYU for college. She taught at a public school part-time while working on her degree in English, Creative Writing, and Child/Adolescent Mental Studies, then after graduating she taught as an elementary school science teacher in Brooklyn for five years. After completing a dual Master’s in General and Special Education (Grades 1-6) in 2023, she moved to Houston to pursue an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Houston.

After 10 years in New York City, Houston’s atmosphere is a welcome change for Louisa. Since moving here, she’s been completing her MFA, enjoying the slower-paced city living, and (since 2024) tutoring with General Academic.

Louisa has substantial experience in elementary education and she loves working with younger students in all subjects, including:

  • English Language Arts
  • Science
  • Math
  • Social Studies
  • ISEE Lower Level Test Prep
  • ISEE Middle Level Test Prep

Subjects in Focus: ELA & Math

Staying on-track with their ELA and Math learning is so important for every elementary student—and so difficult for many! Younger kids in need of academic assistance in any subject are in great hands with Louisa, and she especially enjoys tutoring ELA and Math.

Louisa’s field and academic experience is in writing and literature; naturally, teaching is extra enjoyable when it’s about her passion. “I am a fiction writer, so I do love when my students are reading novels and/or short stories and talking about the bigger questions: themes, meaning, author intention.”

At the same time, she says math is her favorite subject to tutor. For years, Louisa taught real-world applications of math in elementary science and showed students the connections between topics. Witnessing student growth in math is also uniquely rewarding: “There’s something really satisfying about watching students start to understand new concepts and be able to apply the skills and strategies we’ve been working on to their schoolwork.”

Tutoring Sessions with Louisa

No matter what subject they are learning with Louisa, students find her tutoring sessions encouraging and adapted to their needs. Her patience helps them practice the material without fear of taking too long or getting things wrong, and the connection she forms with each student helps her tailor lessons to their needs.

“My favorite part of being a tutor is building relationships with my students,” reflects Louisa. “Though I do miss whole-group instruction from my years in the classroom, the benefit of tutoring is that the 1:1 environment really allows you to get to know the student and their learning style.”

Let’s dive into a typical tutoring session with Louisa, with a particular focus on how she takes the typical approach of General Academic tutoring and uniquely adapts it to make her sessions productive and effective.

1. Touching Base & Planning the Agenda

A typical in-office session with Louisa starts with a trip to the General Academic kitchen for snacks, followed by a few minutes of checking in. “I like to understand how the student’s day and week has been and what’s been going on in school.” She also asks about homework, which can inform how the lesson will proceed.

Louisa’s agenda for the session is informed by the student’s input. Maybe they want support with some school assignments, or they are struggling with a particular topic; depending on what the student would like to work on, she may go over homework with them, practice a particular topic, or give further enrichment if they seem confident about the material. Asking the student about their priority for the session also helps them practice conducting their learning themselves.

2. Guided Growth: Building Confidence and Mastery

What makes Louisa an exceptionally effective tutor is the way she conducts the pace of learning and guides each student in progressing through increasingly complex topics.

“I like to encourage students and build confidence by showing them the next step in mastery within a topic,” says Louisa.. By peeking ahead of the concept at hand, a student will see how the concept functions within the bigger picture, how far they’ve progressed in their learning, and how close they are to truly understanding the bigger concept. “I don’t like to underestimate my students’ abilities, and I don’t want them to either.”

Louisa is a huge believer in scaffolding. Building mastery of a topic takes hands-on guidance, hands-off practice, and an objective to focus on the future: “…sometimes introducing the next level of depth within a topic or skill helps to demystify the idea of “sixth grade math” for a fifth grade student.”

3. Wrap-Up: Assigning Practice & Goal-Setting

Towards the end of a session, Louisa and her student will discuss goals to reach by the next session. She also considers the student’s input on assignments: “I like to help my students build independence and ownership over their own academic journeys, so I do like to get them to weigh in on what they feel would be most helpful for them.” This is especially the case for fourth graders and older, who will be expected to guide their studying independently in the years to come.

Together with the student’s perspective on their capabilities and needs, Louisa says she relies on detailed session notes to keep track of what’s been accomplished and what makes sense to focus on next.

Louisa—Beyond the Classroom

Outside of the General Academic study lounge, Louisa channels her energy into writing, reading, and making the most of a peaceful, productive summer.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: “My main hobbies are reading, writing, and playing the piano. I also love doing yoga and other forms of exercise including pilates and swimming. I also love watching movies, TV, and musical theater!”

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro book coverQ: Do you have a favorite book?

A: “My all-time favorite book is Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. I love books that are set at schools, coming-of-age stories, and a slow burn, and Ishiguro takes on all of this in this book.”

Q: What kinds of music do you like?

A: “I’m pretty content listening to music in any genre. ABBA has unironically been my favorite band since childhood, but I’ve been embracing listening to some more country music since moving to Texas.”

Q: What season do you enjoy the most?

A: “My favorite time of year is summer, despite the Houston heat. I love the way everything slows down, and I always find that I get the most reading and writing done during the summer months.”

Q: If you could have dinner with any three people, living or not, who would they be and why?

A: “I would have dinner with two of my favorite authors, Kazuo Ishiguro and Stephen King, so I could pick their brains about their craft, and perhaps Zendaya because she is fabulous and seems like a lot of fun.”
