Rebecca Lu’s tutoring sessions help students become more fluent and confident in mathematics. Dozens of elementary and middle schoolers have improved their math grades and test results with Rebecca’s patient, comprehensive approach. We sat down with her to discuss her background and tutoring style.
A Scholar of Financial Math
Originally from Madison, Mississippi, Rebecca moved to Houston in 2022 to attend Rice University for her undergraduate education. She started teaching others while working on her Bachelor’s degree—in 2024, she tutored with America Reads, a program where local students in need of academic support are connected with undergraduate students to mentor and tutor them. She also worked as a teaching assistant while she was an undergraduate student, giving her experience teaching material to college-level learners.
After graduating with her Bachelor’s degree in Finance, she is now pursuing her Master’s in Accounting while tutoring with General Academic. A part of our fantastic team of tutors since Fall 2025, Rebecca helps 3rd through 8th graders become mini mathematicians.
Over the course of their tutoring sessions, Rebecca’s students strengthen their foundations in math: sessions cover the broad range of concepts required for 3rd-8th grade math, including introductory algebra and geometry to the basics of data analysis and probability.
Why She Loves Algebra
Math is not just the subject Rebecca is most experienced in tutoring, but it’s her favorite to teach. “It comes more naturally to me, and I want to help others understand it too,” she says. Within the many topics that elementary and middle school math courses entail, her favorite topic is Algebra.
Rebecca says that solving equations is a great opportunity to teach students how to understand, not just how to memorize. “I like teaching students that an equation is like a balance,” she continues. “Whatever you do to one side, you need to do to the other.” Concepts in Algebra (and math as a whole) build upon each other, making it especially satisfying to see students go far with the basic skills you teach them. “It’s rewarding to see students gain confidence as they realize they can use the same reasoning to solve increasingly challenging problems.”
How Rebecca Likes to Tutor
Rebecca’s students find her sessions encouraging and adapted to their needs. Her patience helps them practice the material without fear of taking too long or getting things wrong, ensuring that they learn and remember the many processes involved in math accurately.
“My favorite part of being a tutor is seeing a student go from feeling confused or frustrated to genuinely understanding a concept and feeling confident in their ability to solve problems on their own,” Rebecca reflects. “I especially enjoy helping students break complicated topics down into smaller, more manageable pieces and finding an explanation that works for the way they learn. What motivates me most is seeing students make progress and become more confident and independent learners.”
Let’s dive into a typical tutoring session with Rebecca, with a particular focus on how she takes the core approach of General Academic tutoring and uniquely adapts it to make her sessions productive and effective.
1. Touching Base
A typical in-office session with a General Academic tutor starts with a trip to the General Academic kitchen for snacks, followed by a few minutes of checking in. “I typically start a session by asking the student what they are currently struggling with and what they would like to accomplish during our time together.” She asks about homework and about any concerns that are front of mind for the student. Student involvement in setting objectives for the session helps them build the skills they’ll need for independent studying: analyzing their needs, developing a game plan, and sticking to it.
Rebecca always makes sure to build rapport with students so that they feel comfortable during the sessions. “I like to ask them about their weekend, their school day, and just about their life, so that they enjoy coming out to tutoring.”
2. Guided Growth
Once Rebecca and her student are on the same page about the priorities of the tutoring session, they start studying. Whether it’s the student’s homework or practice questions targeting specific topic weaknesses, Rebecca works through the material with the student rather than simply giving them the answer in order to see their thought process in action. “I like to identify where their understanding breaks down and then build from that point,” she reflects.
It’s essential for elementary and middle school students to have a solid understanding of the material they are learning, as mathematics is cumulative—knowledge gaps widen when new concepts must build upon earlier ones that are not mastered. By analyzing the student’s current abilities as they work through math problems, Rebecca sees exactly which foundational concepts they are struggling with and addresses them, fortifying their ability core math skills.
3. Wrap-Up: Assigning Practice & Goal-Setting
After Rebecca and her student finish working through the material, they review what they’ve worked on and discuss next steps. She makes sure to base assignments and goals on the student’s current level of understanding, as well as their upcoming coursework and concept areas where they have the opportunity for the most improvement.
Rebecca’s approach to goal-setting adapts to the student’s growth. “I try to make goals specific and achievable while still challenging the student.” She adds, “I also adjust them as the student progresses. If they demonstrate that they have mastered a concept, I move on to more challenging applications rather than continuing to practice something they already understand.”

Outside of the General Academic study lounge, Rebecca spends her time cultivating her health and peace.
Q: What do you like to do for fun? Any skills you’re building?
A: “I’ve been trying to cook more, so I like trying new recipes. I’ve also been trying to run more and get into lifting to gain muscle.”
Q: What do you like watching in your free time?
A: “My favorite tv shows are probably Psych, Modern Family, or The Good Place.”
Q: What kinds of music do you like?
A: “I like listening to Christian music, KRNB, and pop music. I mostly like to listen to chill music.”
Q: What’s your favorite holiday or time of year?
A: “My favorite time of year would be Christmas time because all the time is together and it’s a time of relaxation.”
Q: If you could have dinner with any three people, living or not, who would they be and why?
A: “If I could have dinner with any one person, living or dead, I would choose Jesus. I would love to ask him how he found the strength to show such compassion, forgiveness, and courage in the face of suffering. I imagine that sharing a simple meal with him would be both humbling and comforting, an opportunity to see what it truly means to live with love, faith, and purpose. The other two people would probably be Bruno Major and wave to earth because I like their music.”
